Review: Mrugam is a movie about a village that is constantly attacked by a leopard. Varunni (Mammootty) is the son of a hunter who dies earlier. Varunni is a womanizer and a drunk who's reputation attracts a lot of hatred in the village. Bhagyalakshmi (Sunitha) is fond of Varunni and is the only friend Varunni has. But Bhagyalakshmi's friend, Thomas (Mahesh) has feelings for her and gets jealous of Varunni's relationship with her. One day Thomas and Varunni get into an argument and Thomas falls off a cliff by accident and Varunni is haunted by guilt. This incident changes Varunni's personality for the better after he confesses to the village priest. When Thomas' sister, Annamma's (Urvashi) wedding breaks off, the priest suggests that Varunni marry her to save her from humiliation. But Bhagyalakshmi who feels betrayed, tries to get back at Varunni by telling the truth about Thomas' death. Varunni confesses to his crime and walks back home in shame. When he finds the leopard near his house he fights it in a gruesome battle and finally kills it. Later, Annamma calls the police and gets Varunni arrested. While sitting in the police jeep, Bhagyalakshmi tells him that she'll be waiting for him. Before Varunni could answer her, the jeep leaves.
